The brown trout’s story starts far from Wisconsin. Native to the mountain streams and lakes of Europe, the first browns crossed the Atlantic in 1883 as 80,000 fertilized eggs packed in a steamship’s icehouse. They came from the Black Forest of Germany, which is where the name “German brown” comes from. By 1900, brown trout had been stocked in 38 states, and most of those populations went wild and began reproducing on their own. Over the next century, the immigrant became a legend.

From the spring creeks of the Driftless to the Wolf, the Namekagon, and the Bois Brule, Wisconsin’s rivers are some of the finest brown trout water in the country. This design honors that water: the cedar-lined banks, the morning fog on the riffles, and the quiet moment just before the rise.
